![]() As is understandable, there is a lot of urgency to reopen schools. Governor Newsome recently released his plan for doing this, called the Safe Schools for All plan. As of this posting (1/17/21), this plan has not been passed by legislature. Here is an overview of the plan and it's implications. The state has also released a hub where parents, staff and the community to learn the latest about reopening plans in our local areas. While this plan creates an opening for many schools to reopen, for school districts in the purple tier, it also creates some challenges and is drawing attention away from plans that were already established to support reopening. This EdSource article outlines some of the challenges districts are facing. Related to Alameda Unified, there are a few questions that need to be clarified: (1) How does this plan compare to the expectations set by Alameda County and when there is a conflict in guidance, which one prevails? (2) How will AUSD manage the logistics and costs of the testing required in this plan? (3) What is the infection rates make it impossible for AUSD to reopen? How will the district be supported? In the January 12, 2021 school board meeting, we reviewed the district's current plan for reopening, and set a goal for reopening all schools for March 8th, pending further clarification of the infection rates, guidance from Alameda County and the state as to the expectations for reopening, the feasibility for AUSD to conduct the necessary testing, among other factors. Per the plan, we will be reviewing factors impacting reopening and possibly re-evaluating the opening date based on emerging information. Below is a screenshot of the decision-making frames Superintendent Scuderi shared in his presentation. Here is the link to the full agenda item and presentation and to the board meeting recording. |
